Subject: oh no did i get the wrong rim??
I have an Alex 103 (no Alex jokes, please).
I have a v good and accurate high register and an ok low register. I usually play high parts, so that's alright with me. But I do sometimes wish I had a bigger, warmer, sound for lyrical solos and it is also harder to creep in quietly.
With this in mind, I got myself a PHC 23 cup and AS rim. It feels rather like blowing through a wind tunnel (!!) in comparison to the 3B - sooo little resistance and I love the tone quality, it sounds beautiful in the middle register and everything is great except...the v high register just isn't as secure, I mean top A,B,C and also stamina in the high register. So, much as I love the sound, it's just not an option for me.
I'm thinking that, if I switch the rim, I can keep that lovely tone and also be more secure in the high register? Should I try a US-1 or US-2 rim? There is nothing quite as small in either internal diameter or rim width as a 3B but would one of these two be the closest bet?
Thoughts please...!?
