Sorry to pitch in with further complications but have you considered trying a German mouthpiece? I've always found my Alex works best with an Alex or similar m/p. The Alex 8, though the same inner diameter as an AS, feels a little smaller (a sharper bite?). Also, it seems to make my Alex really work at its best and ring. It is a smallish m/p but the sound it produces is surprisingly full.
