So, you're saying that with over 200 years of experience in making horns/mouthpieces, Alexander still doesn't know what it's doing? Horn tone quality is a very subjective matter and seems to be subject to changes in fashion, with the "Alex sound" currently being largely out of fashion in the UK - although it is still in fashion in Germany etc. For all that we players agonise over it, I doubt that audiences (unless consisting of horn players) notice the difference between types of horn/mouthpiece used. The most important consideration in choosing an instrument/mouthpiece, surely, should be whether a given combination makes it as easy as possible to get the notes in whatever register a given player normally operates in.
