In my experience if a horn isn't producing a pleasant sound it's likely to be the player rather than the instrument or mouthpiece he or she is using.
Mouthpieces which come with instruments tend to be average, dimensionally speaking and are unlikely to suit everyone. Certainly, players should experiment and you're absolutely right about the desirability of modifying mouthpieces to reach the ideal. Indeed, Alexander is probably the only manufacturer which provides the mouthpiece with what is basically just a starting hole which can be bored out to the desired diameter (surprising how many people don't realise this and play on Alex mouthpieces as originally supplied).
