Now the sound I am making is 20 times larger with a fraction of the effort because the cup bore is so much bigger, I can play so much louder before it gets brassy, the tone is so mellow I just hope I don't sound too much like a euphonium (!), lip trills are a piece of cake because there is more of my lips inside the mouthpiece to trill with (!), musically I can shape notes and communicate things much more easily because my lips have the freedom to do that and I've been having so much fun playing just for the fun of it over the past few days! The high register improves each day on the AS rim and I think I might just be a convert.
Tony H kindly sent me a US-2 rim, in case I couldn't hack it with the AS, and I tried it today. One interesting conclusion is that a lot of the above benefits are due to the AS rim and not just the 23 cup - because keeping the cup the same and using the US-2 rim did lose a lot of that warm sound I was enjoying so much. Anyway, this is what I think after just 3 days - it will take longer before I know if the AS rim will work for me, but it's looking good now.
I'm v grateful to Tony C for his suggestion not to ditch the AS rim when my attempt to play brandenburg 1 straight off with a much bigger mouthpiece didn't quite go to plan!!
