John, the Bb horn needs 3/4 extension for handstopping so you need the extension H-section in place for that. Without that extension the valve puts you in A.
The A+ valve is very useful for open notes below the stave (G, C etc) and I have also done the whole of the prologue to Britten's Serenade for tenor, horn and strings in this way on a Bb/f alto horn.
