It is true that I was playing 2nd horn on that recording of Schönberg's Chamber Symphony #1 and in the original box set of records they got my name right. When it was released on its own they got confused and put Tony Halstead down as 2nd horn. I said nothing and waited for someone to complain that Tony H was off form on that record or for TH to deny that it was him but I was not aware that anyone said anything. My crafty conclusion was that I must have played OK, proving my point that when you play 2nd horn to Barry Tuckwell you play much better because he takes you with him. It is a magical experience and I feel very lucky to have been his 2nd horn on that recording and some others like Thea Musgrave's Night Music (I am Alan Chidell on that one) and Bach's Brandenburg 1 whith the Academy of St.Martin's in the pigeon crap which doesn't even mention the horn players. I was Aubrey Chidell when we broadcast a concert with Tuckwell's own wind ensemble and the announcer got that wrong and called me Audrey. I wasn't meant to be famous. By the way BT never told me or any other horn player in his section how to play, what to leave out, what dynamics he wanted, what fingerings to use on to A, how to play in tune etc etc etc. Any section players out there who know how special that is?
One 1st horn in a leading London orchestra even told the 2nd horn to leave out "the high notes" in Mozart 25 and he wasn't even playing!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable and she didn't even throttle him.
Plenty of typos so don't bother florals.
