This is a superb Brandenburg 1 played on modern horns with The Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

Classic FM on demand for this concert is at

http://www.classicfm.com/radio/aod/?episodeId=253812

Brandenburg 1 is the first piece on the program after the tiresome Jane Jones has finished her simpering introduction.

The horn players are Barry Tuckwell and Tony Chidell

Very nice indeed...

The recording I grew up with, and that was the start of my love for the instrument, was the ECO one with Tony Halstead and Christian Rutherford, really very beautiful. Not sure what year it was recorded, perhaps Tony can recall? Possibly 70s or very early 80s?

Thanks for the compliment, Deano.
In fact Christian R. and I recorded it twice with the ECO. One was with Raymond Leppard directing from the harpsichord and the other was conducted by Johannes Somary.
Glad you seem to have enjoyed one of those! :D

I remember listening to it as a 14 year old (still not sure which version) and thinking that I wanted to play like that when I grew up.

Well, after 30 odd years I still can't play like that and I suspect I'll fall short for the next 30 odd years, but it's still a wonderful and inspirational recording.
