Hello!

Today I had an accident with my mouthpiece. It fell down to the floor and small piece or metal came out from the shank of the mouthpiece.

See the photo:

Now the sound is a bit airy and not so focused as before. So I wanted to ask, what to do? When I cut off that broken part of shank, what will then happen? Is mouthpiece totally unplayable?

Or perhaps someone has any more hints, how to repair it?

Thanks!

The mouthpiece in the photo seems to be in very bad condition anyway, quite corroded and rusty! Suggestion: buy a new mouthpiece and keep it clean! ;)

I would have thought you have nothing to lose by cutting off a minimal amount from the end of the shank. I can't imagine that this will make it sound worse.

Odd that it's chipped in this way - must be very brittle. I can't see how it could be repaired.

As GER says - maybe someone is telling you to get a new mouthpiece!

You just need to make sure there are no sharp edges or distortion to roundness preventing the mouthpiece seating properly.

My suggestion is you should throw what looks to me like a Wick away and buy a PHC! :o

But isn't possible to do some solering work with some metal ( copper , silver ) to fill the broken part of the shank?
Or is it useless?

BTW, I have tried some PHC components. Fact is , they do not have the same dimensions of mouthpiece I am looking for.

If it is a Wick , yes, it is useless even before it 'broke'! :?

Your mouthpiece must have some quite 'unique dimensions' if you can't find a PHC mouthpiece that is similar to it ( but better of course) as there are now 6,480 six thousand four hundred and eighty possible combinations of PHC cups and rims, if you include Heavy cups, Z cups and Stainless steel cups.
:D
or maybe 'the 2 Tony's deliberately avoided making a PHC combination that was like a 'Wick'?

Ha,

That's a museum piece (or scrap metal) not a mouthpiece.

Maybe put the dimensions on your Christmas List and hope Santa will take pity on you>

If I told you who designed those DW 'things' you would never believe me! :o

"If I told you who designed those DW 'things' you would never believe me!"

"The range of Denis Wick mouthpieces is huge, over 100 models, each of which has been individually designed and modified by Mr Wick himself." (from http://www.woodwindandbrass.co.uk/acata ... _wick.html)

However, I take it Mike knows better. Mind you, a horn mouthpiece designed by a trombonist sounds pretty convincingly like a recipe for disaster.

Just asking: Wick mouthpieces are bad because of being designed by Denis Wick who is a trombonist?
Or are there some aspects why Wick mouthpieces are not good?
