Attended the Feb 5 Philharmonia concert. MSD overture, Songs of a Wayfarer, and Beethoven 6. Wonderful horn playing start to finish. Great section work and exquisite solos (K. Woolley). Kudos all around.

It's refreshing to read a positive account of a concert on this forum!
And for someone playing a 103 as well
Anyone going to either of KW's upcoming Strauss 2 performances?

Cannot make the Strauss concert due to it being midweek, but hope to see the Britten Serenade and Shoskatovich 5 in May as its on a Sunday.

If you like a bit of "horn" in your concert, the following could be interesting:

22/03/15, Weston Auditorium Hatfield, Till Eulenspiegel, Strauss 2 (Roger Montgomery) and Mahler 5.

I have tickets for the 12th.

She still plays a 103 doesn't she? It's the only reason I'm going ;)

It's good that she is playing a double horn, as in long F and Bb. Quite a few 1st horns in London still managing to stay away from the dreaded F alto (or Eb alto). Looking around at the orchestras are the RPO, BBCSO, ENO and Philharmonia the only orchestras featuring an alto/descant horn on a 1st horn chair in London?

"Quite a few 1st horns in London still managing to stay away from the dreaded F alto (or Eb alto)."

What's the problem with first-horns using altos? (Or triples, for that matter.)

The instruments are never single F alto horns and the majority of the time are played on their Bb side - like a double would be.

Mind you, years ago some die-hards condemned double horns. A bit further back, horns with valves were regarded with suspicion.

See John Cerminaro's claim that the triple is the horn of the future - http://tinyurl.com/mkj9hq5
See Frøydis Ree Wekre's scepticism about Cerminaro's article (and about altos) - http://tinyurl.com/lvzyg7o

Well if I had to play the damn thing night after night and be note perfect, ANYTHING to make life a shade less tiring would be taken up with some enthusiasm!

It's tough enough maintaining standards as a good amateur ........................
