Depending on the horn you can sometimes get an excellent top B open (15th Harmonic
on the F Horn) if your Bb 2nd valve note isn't "wide" enough for comfort. Some Vienna
horn players use this harmonic for greater accuracy up there but not all.

By the same ruling, there are other useful 'wider' pitches available as 15th harmonics, all of which I have heard/ seen Vienna players using:
Bb - 2nd valve
A - 1st valve
G# - valves 1 +2

if you want to use these, best to keep the horn tuned on the sharp side, as the major 3rd from harmonics 12 to 15 is a 'pure' one, meaning that harmonic 15 can be a tad flat. :geek:

I must be a real 'conversation killer' as I see that there's been not a single follow-up to this for two and a half days! :geek: ;)

Tony, rejoice in your exalted postion as the one who has the last word! ;)

At least for a bit...Somewhere along this thread there was mention of the tendency to go sharp in public being due to people always practising at mezzo forte at home, then getting pumped up at rehearsal or performance, and playing louder. Am I in the minority being one who sometimes tends to go flatter when playing at full volume, especially at highr pitches?

Also, I have noted that most of the Farkas lip slurs are to be practised at piano volume. When I played trumpet, I used a book by Herbert L. Clarke that was marked pianissimo. I have asssumed that the lip-building and control-building was better at low volumes. But what good is that in the real world, where we play from very quiet to very loud, and everywhere in between? So I practise at all kinds of volumes. Any thoughts?

BTW, I know I should have done my practising in college. (I have not seen a post from Old Cyril in a long time, but I know he's watching!) ;)

Eric, I totally agree with you.

I tend to play a little lower in the concert setting than I do in rehearsal. I porbabyl warm up better and truly try keep my center of pitch down. Also perhaps since I have been told for so many years that playing loud and/or higher makes you go sharp I probably have learned to over compensate for it.

I don't know about Farcas, but my Moeck and other books use lip slurs to warm up and increase flexibility. The exercises are all piano or softer. If you are sluring in order to warm up I supposed you should keep it easy at first and then add a little volume here and there.

I agree we must practice at all volume levels. After all the lip position is different for G at piano vs a G at Double forte. But don't warm up that wat from the get go - be sure to work into it.
