asolutely Jan

There is usually a "honeymoon" period followed by a "what have I done period ?" and then you come through the other side. The lips are about the most sensitive part of the body and changes of less than a mm feel enormous so they do require some re-adjustment.

If you've changed cup too then that compounds the problem.

It will pass.

But how long does it last usually, this so called "what i have done?" period?
After playing on M rim a week, feeling is really strange.
Played Mozart piano concerto 25 today and in 2nd movement was really hard to hold high notes in pianissimo. I had moment, when I wanted to take my older mouthpiece...
Do you think, does it make high range easier to use 23a cup instead of 25a. Or should use it only in high horn occasions?

I would give a new mouthpiece a few weeks to "settle in".

However, a 25 cup seems large for "high notes".

Mozart's Piano Concerto No 25, second movement, has horns in F. First horn's top note here is G on top of the stave. I assume this is the note you mean - not outrageously high, certainly.

According to my teacher, most first horn players would use a 22 or 23.

I have used a 21 in Schumann's Rhenish, second movement - first horn - lots of top Bs. At the moment I'm using a 22 for the first part in Beethoven 7.

Sometimes I practise with a 23.

I have a much easier time on the upper range with the 23a compared to the 23. However, if I want more sound, I use the 23.

You might want to back away from the upper range as you acclimate to the new rim and cup. It will come in good time. Remember, you have an injury, so there is more involved than just a mouthpiece change. I think lip slurs are the best transitional adjustment exercises, as you can really pay close attention to what is going on with the lips.

Thanks for advice, Sandy!

By the way, did You also tried 25A cup? Did you feel its too deep and therefore harder to play in high or is it question about tone colour?

I mainly play 3rd and I found the 25A very hard work at the high end, though it does give a great sound lower down. I also tried a 21A for a while, but never liked the sound quality and it didn't make the top end that much easier: the 23A seems to be the best all-round compromise for me. Bear in mind I am a very average amateur with a dodgy ear and not enough time to practice, so any advice from me comes with a health warning!
