One of the most secure notes on a Vienna Horn is a top B on 1st valve. Top C on 2 and 3 by the way.

see http://www.wienerhorn.com/AltesForum/fc ... 90357&pg=1 as an example (remember h = b natural in english).

I have also found it virtually impossible to get a top Bb on my Vienna horn (F crook) with the "official" F horn fingering of 1st valve. No problem when fingered 2 & 3, though. Have others found this, or is it just a peculiarity of my particular instrument (maybe a duff crook)?

On my Vienna horn (a late C20 Robert Engel) 15th and 17th partials are generally more stable and in tune than 16th partials, so I use:
Top C: 2
Top B: 0 or 1
Top Bb: 2 or 12

These idiosyncracies seem to be typical of early valve horns (and modern reproductions!) - piston horns often have similar individual quirks - it's simply a case of finding what works best for each note on each instrument.

What types of Vienna horn are others playing in the UK?

In my case, a Pizka Classic, made by Robert Worischek, Sachsenkam.

Just stick to 2/3 for top Ab Bb and top C
Practice all slurred Eb - Ab - Eb - Bb - Eb - C - Eb - Bb - Eb - Ab with a nice warm forte all on 2/3 for about a year and it should all settle down nicely. ;)

Actually, on second thoughts, probably the best thing to practice is middle C to middle G in all lengths and dynamics to get that to sound good first, the rest becomes easier after that in any case. Allegedly.

I don't suppose PHC makes a Viennese Mouthpiece do they? Tony?

Nice to see Richard Strauss conducting

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doJVlS7n ... re=related

No tiresome facial expressions like Simon 'eyebrows' Rattle and co. Wish there were more like him. His horn playing father probably came home complaining about this or that 'maestro' and possibly that had an effect on his father. Why are there no good women conductors (except on buses)?

:)

I believe Franz Strauss was even more active than that in the conducting advice he gave to his son:

"It is unlovely to make such motions like a snake in the grass and particularly for such a tall man as you are ....The fire of conducting comes from another point.... The left hand has nothing more to do than to turn the pages of the score, or. if there is no score, to keep still. The stimulation of the musicians by the conductor has to come from his baton and eye. I beg you, dear Richard, follow my advice and give up these antics. You don't need that ...."

Just stumbled over these pictures of Franz Strauss's horn.

That's a great horn. I just wrote a long appreciative reply and my broadband connection dropped. Can't write that all over again now. Good to see that he was a thinking horn player, not dominated by convention, tradition and/or dogma.

Why are so many good young 1st horns using descant horns? They can play the notes without, surely.

:o
