Are you the 'fred' who famously recorded the Brahms Trio in the 1960s, playing ALL THREE PARTS:
Wonderful horn playing; excellent piano playing; 'Ok-ish' violin playing ( although as I have heard, violin playing was 'fred's actual profession, maybe in the NYPO or the Met orchestra?)

No Will, in the 1960s, I was a todler. I have never played violin and have never played piano. Was that all three parts of the Brahms at the same time? That would have been famous!

I have that recording!
It's amazing that so long ago with the rather primitive technology ( it's a 'mono' recording) of the time, it was possible to 'triple track' it.
The acoustic is very dry and 'boxy' though, but it's a very fine performance especially the horn which is dark and smooth-toned.
ALL THREE parts ( Horn, violin and piano) are player by FREDDY VOGELGESANG. ( "birdsong"!)

Peter Hirsch on the USA 'hornlist' writes as follows:

This record used to be fairly common in cutout bins here in NYC. I'm sorry
that I didn't pick up a dozen copies. Ironically, or maybe appropriately,
it seemed to come from the same source as the Music Minus One LPs. One of
the cute touches of this album was the cover photo which had Vogelgesang in
concert à tre, so to speak. Given the fact that this was done some thirty
years or more ago, the level of technical trickery was pretty impressive. I
recall speaking with free-lancers here that knew him and they said that he
was somewhat embarrassed by the low-level notoriety that the album brought
to him. This record was much fun to play for unsuspecting friends.
Unfortunately, my copy seems to have been loaned out to one friend too many
and remains missing in action; I've desperately tried to figure out who has
it, but no one will admit it. Perhaps one of my old horn acquaintances
reading this posting has it (unintentionally un-returned, of course) and
will get in touch. All is forgiven.

I bet Tony H could match this extraordinary feat. He can certainly play the horn and piano parts and it would be no great surprise to find that he can play the violin part as well.

Thanks for your kind compliment, Richard...! :D
I currently have enough difficulty with the horn part of the Brahms Trio and it's at least 10 years since I attempted the piano part ( in public - however I sometimes try to play it in private 'for fun' ) but there's NO WAY I could possibly play the violin part!

Forgive me if anyone's posted this link already but I am truly amazed at the Vienna Horns - Director's Cut album and have been for some months.

This haggered old tune is one of my least favourite in the entirety of the cosmos but I forced myself to listen to the end, I'm glad I did.

The playing is truly remarkable, and if (like me) you want to vomit when you hear the main theme just skip on to 7 minutes 31 and marvel at the control the principle player has over the extreme high register.

Enjoy!

The Vienna Philharmonic orchestra is due to publish details of its history during the Nazi era in response to accusations of a cover-up.

The orchestra has come under fire for not acknowledging alleged links to the Nazis.

The orchestra says it will also give more details about a ring of honour it presented to Baldur von Schirach, a Nazi governor of Vienna.

Von Schirach oversaw the deportation of tens of thousands of Jews.

The ring, originally presented in 1942, was lost by Von Schirach but it is claimed that a replacement was given to him in the 1960s after his release from Spandau prison for crimes against humanity.

Correspondents say Austria took several decades after World War II to acknowledge and express regret for its role in Hitler's Third Reich and in the Holocaust.

On Tuesday the country is due to mark the 75th anniversary of its annexation by Nazi Germany. The Anschluss (union) was complete when German forces invaded Austria unopposed on 12 March 1938.

Three historians, led by Oliver Rathkolb, have been commissioned by the Vienna Philharmonic to produce articles on the orchestra's history in the Nazi era that will be published on its website.

Concentration camps

They are expected to reveal details of 13 musicians said to have been driven out of the orchestra because of their Jewish origins or their stance on Germany's annexation of Austria.

Five of the musicians died in concentration camps.

Some members of the Philharmonic at the time have in the past been identified as Nazis.

The orchestra says it is not obliged to give public access to its archives as it is a private organisation, although it does allow access to some historians and scholars.

Orchestra Chairman Clemens Hellberg has been accused of failing to include details of the Philharmonic's Nazi links in his 1992 book Democracy of Kings, which is widely regarded as the orchestra's official history.

He has since said he did not have access to all the relevant documents when he wrote the book.

According to a summary of Oliver Rathkolb's report handed to the New York Times last month, the revelation that a replacement ring was given to Von Schirach after his release from prison came to light only recently. Von Schirach's son Richard wrote about it in a book in 2004 but refused to name the man who gave it to his father.

Mr Rathkolb found out the man's identity elsewhere.

The Vienna Philharmonic is well known for its annual New Year's Concert, a Strauss waltz extravaganza.

However, historians say the concert originated as a propaganda instrument under Nazi rule in 1939.

Very interesting.

Will there be reconciliation after truth?

How many horns do they have? When you see them on video or TV there are often horn players who don't look anything like the photos of the regular section members.

Anyone know how many extras they use?
