Great orchestras don't shoot their wounded. If you think that sacking people ever made
a great anything then you and I will have to disagree. There is also constructive,
accurate criticism and rank bad manners. I think you know what I mean.

I can think of a couple of fantastic players who were given their marching orders when they ran into a tricky patch in an orchestra called the SLO or something.

What does 'SLO' mean, come on, don't be shy, Will Sue can't get you...
Scottish Light Orch, surely not?
SCO?
(R)SNO?
Do tell!

To make music the performer must take risks - on occasion he/she will fail. The really
great ensembles accept this. What they will not accept is note getters. I accept that
the LSO is on occasion a "great orchestra" but with a track record of chaotic employment
procedures that greatness will always be transient. I have a friend in the profession who
describes British orchestras as consistently mediocre. No offence but I think he has a
point. How can you make music if every entry becomes a career threatening ordeal?

Your omission of the word 'also', between 'friend' and 'in' leads me to the assumption that you aren't a professional, Chris(?)
OK, neither am I :!:
Maybe that's why we both hold some rather naïve views compared to the rather more realistic ones of the (assumed) pros (Mike?) who have been contributing to this thread. ;)

I am fully aware that British orchestras sack players almost on a whim but as Mike
says it is not a good situation.
I am trying to make the point without offence that you cannot (to my mind) become a
"great" orchestra if the turnover of players changes in the London fashion.
BTW I am a retired pro and have suffered the slings and arrows on more than one
occasion which is why I feel strongly about the scene in this country. If the sacking of
the wounded is policy, then I don't think you can claim to be a great anything.
Rambling over, somebody please change the subject away from this depression!

Perhaps an American visitor to this site will enlighten us. The only American players
I know play in Europe where I think the most "civilised" terms and conditions exist.
There is more to life than horn playing and if the pressure becomes too great the result
can lead in some cases to tragic consequences.

Yes, beautiful playing. Pity about the bloke pulling funny faces and waving his arms about.

Were the Vienna Horns using Vienna horns on all the tracks of their CDs or did they use F altos for some high tracks? You can't tell by listening and it always sounds as clean as a Bb horn.
