I recently heard the story of a conductor's (don't remember who) conflict with Dale Clevenger, where he (God knows how) was not aware of the brass players need to empty water from their instrument, and so asked Dale and the section to stop doing it...and when he later angrily confronted the section questioning the source of the resulting gurgling sound, Dale demonstrated the source of the problem by pooring the contents of his horn onto his shoe.

I think Dale declared war there and then! What a hero though! :D

I imagine a fair few of you have heard this one?

There is a written account from the 19th century of a horn section being asked to not suck the water from their crooks into their mouths and spit it onto the floor as this was very noisy and distracting! :shock: :? :lol:

oh wait hang on I've misremembered that story. It was Farkas not Clevenger. It was when he was playing in the Chicago symphony orchestra (probably why I assumed Clevenger) under Rafael Kubelik.

"You heard me, Don't take the water out of your horns!".

"We smiled, and because there was nothing important on the programme except for a lot of loud playing, we simply kept the water in for an hour....
....as soon as it was over Kubelik rushed back and yelled, 'Are you trying to make fun of me? What are you doing with that funny sound?'

....we're not trying to make fun of you, you told us not to take the water out of our horns and that's what we did...

"What difference does that make?" he snarled.

I was mad as hell; I took the slide out of my horn and dumped a teacup of water on his shoe.

'That's the difference', I told him.

if it were true...I suspect there is more than a hint of the Chinese Whispers about this one.
Any horn player here in the UK, however famous, who poured a teacup of water onto a conductor's shoe, however much of a nonentity the conductor was, would probably be dismissed and furthermore charged with assault.
