Hi Folks,

I've been off the scene too long clearly.

I just stumbled across this spirited performance of the D Minor Concerto by Rossetti on period instruments. The soloist a lady by the name of Helen MacDougall.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQku0mpQa_U

Can anyone tell me a little more about her, I really like her style on this recording.

Regards,

Dean.

"HELEN MACDOUGALL studied horn in Canberra, Australia, with Hector McDonald. After her graduation in 1991 she came to the Netherlands for postgraduate study, and has since then played freelance with all the symphony orchestras of the Dutch provinces and as first horn in the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. Her specialisation is in the authentic performance practises of Baroque and Classical music using period instruments, for which she makes frequent tours throughout Europe with ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Musiciens du Louvre, and Il Fondamento. Chamber music continues to play an important role for her on both early and modern instruments." (from http://keeshilh.home.xs4all.nl/helen.html)

"Helen MacDougall studied horn at the School of Music of the Australian National University in Canberra, graduating with honours. She moved to Europe in 1992 to pursue her interests in researching and using authentic performance methods. Since then she has performed throughout the world with many of the famous early music ensembles of Europe, most notably as a regular member of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century (1993-2005) and Les Arts Florissants (from 2003). She has also played with La Petite Bande, Anima Eterna, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Freiburger Barockorchester, Akademie Alte Musik Berlin, Concerto Köln, Wiener Akademie, Il Fondamento, Il Complesso Barocco, Orchestra Libera Classica (Japan) and Pratum Integrum (Moscow), among others. With the latter she recorded Rosetti's Horn Concerto in d, released by Caro Mitis in 2005. As a chamber musician she has recorded with La Petite Bande and Nachtmusique. Helen has lectured or given master classes in Japan, Russia, Australia and Brazil, and was invited to lead the specialism "The Natural Horn in Modern Music" for the International Horn Society Symposium in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 2007. She also founded the Don Banks Trio which performs modern music (on valve horn) and has had many pieces specially written for it. Her main research interest is pinpointing the exact moment that hand-technique was introduced on the horn, through the early records of French and Belgian hunting-horn groups, and consulting with instrument makers to develop a more plausible reproduction of eighteenth century instruments." Useful thing, Google. You should try it some time.

Thank you Observer, I'm perfectly capable of doing a Google search...

To clarify my question, has anybody met this lady, played with her and/or know what her aspirations are. Personal thoughts would be most welcome, I'm sure we're all capable of operating a search engine.

Regards,

D.

I am sorry I seem to have upset you, Dean, and I'm surprised, from what I have gathered about your character and personality from your posts, that you have so quickly rushed into invective. I made a flippant remark, nothing more. "Aggressive and puerile... patronising" - really! "Puffed up individual... a nobody who has achieved nothing in the realm of horn playing" - that'll be me, I suppose. (You do know me, right? We have met?)

I don't know how you expect people to understand that your question was aimed solely at those "who had actually met, and played, with the lady". Apparently my own failure to understand this shows my "glaringly obvious lack of intelligence".

Your post was a good one in that it alerted me to a player I knew nothing of (I suppose that proves I'm ignorant) and I was interested in what Google unearthed. I just found it amusing that your question "Can anyone tell me a little more about her..." seemed to ignore some readily available information.

People coming to this thread for the first time may well be initially puzzled at the apparent lack of continuity between Deano's comment on my post and my riposte to it. That is because he edited what he put after I replied; however, probably I quoted enough of it for people to reconstruct most of it.

I am even more surprised by this than by his comments about my post, as it looks like an attempt to deceive. If he regrets what he put he should be man enough to say so, not just alter it and hope no-one will notice.

I would suggest it is a weakness in the set-up of the forum that people can alter what they have put at any time; there should be a limited period to allow the correction of typos and so on, then the post should be un-editable except to moderators, as happens on other forums.

Dear Observer,

I did react angrily to your patronising post but edited the initial post a matter of minutes after posting it, prior to your response. The sentiments I used at first were an over reaction and uncharacteristically defensive for me. But due to 8 weeks of very painful post operative recovery I have not been my usual tolerant self.

Perhaps in future you should post without patronising a veteran of the profession, that would avoid aggravation don't you think?

Kindest Regards,

Dean.

Thanks for the explanation.

I'll leave it to others to judge whether my initial remarks are in fact patronising - likewise as to whether you're still nursing your offended dignity by referring to yourself as a veteran of the profession (which I don't dispute).

I never set out to offend or aggravate, on this or the other forums I contribute to, nor did I intend to on this occasion.

I am very sorry to hear of your post-operative problems; as a professional healthcare worker (one of several roles I inhabit as part of a confusingly complicated life) I do sympathise and wish you a speedy recovery. I hope your horn-playing has not been affected.

Dear Observer,

I've had a thought, why don't you come along to our next horn blow on the 23rd November at the Brentwood Horn Club?

I'll be happy to pay your subscription for the afternoon blow by way of an apology and we can then meet in person.

The details are on the website: http://deanfoley.wix.com/brentwoodhornclub#!meetings/cnnz

Drop me an email if you're able to attend and let me know what position you prefer to play (high, middle, low etc.), we have 12 definites with a further 13 still to reply. The programme will include some exciting 16 piece arrangements. There's a contact form on the website.

Regards,

Dean.
Unfortunately, the operation has severely affected my playing which is why I am a little tetchy at the moment. Normal practice has resumed however so hopefully things will start to drop in to place.

All I see when I look at Sarah is a very accomplished player who enjoys music and promoting the profile of music in the world.

I suspect all this Sarah Willis bashing stems from envy.
