Before Christmas I came across this video of Alec Frank-Gemmill playing an extract from the Britten Serenade:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVdgHed6OXE

I am familiar with most makes and models of horn, but couldn't identify the horn he was playing. I decided it was some kind of Bb/F-alto with piston change valve, but was so curious (I know, why don't I get a life?). that I e-mailed him about it. He kindly replied and told me that it was a Karl Hill (sometimes known as Kortesmaki) Bb/F-alto.

I can't find out much more about this maker, except that he is located in the USA. No website, it seems. Anybody know anything more about these horns?

Contains a short list of people that use Hill horns.

indicates that there is a 3+ year wait for his horns.

Bruce Richards recounted his experience with a Hill single Bflat horn on his blog, but I don't think that is available anymore.

Hope this isn't redundant.

He must change horns around a lot then - last time I saw him he was playing an Alex 103 (stonking low playing in duets with Katy Woolley at the BHS festival) and previously I saw him with (I think) an Alex 1103

I heard a rumour that he acquired a Rauch a while ago, that might've been the 1103 lookalike?

A few years back he was playing an 1103 but with a non matching bell. Sounded divine when he played Strauss 2 With Leamington Chamber Orchestra. He said his teacher wanted him to change to a 103.
