My main symphony orchestra is doing Bruckner 7 next year 8-)

So, I have a couple of questions...

Where are the best places for short term Wagner tuba hire in UK?
Are there any particularly good (or bad) instruments available?

Thanks in advance!

There is a horn player in the East Anglia area who owns and hires out a set, I think his name is Martin Childs and he seems to play in some of the local orchestras around Cambridge.

Shirley Civil has a set of good'uns, I don't have her number but it's bound to be in the Union Directory (maybe under Shirley Hopkins). Her hire charges aren't too bad.

D :-)

I can't vouch for them, but Tony H is advertising a set of four Wagner tubas for hire for £120 per week. See http://thhe.co.uk/booking/

A Google search brings up some other alternatives, but the OP asked for "the best places" and this suggests he wants a personal recommendation. Sorry I can't do any better!

I had a chance to have a go when one of my orchestras did Bruckner 7 a while back. Well, I did try, but I decided discretion was the better part of valour (and the rest of the section also decided to steer clear!). I found the thing really off-putting to blow and it seems to me that there will be some intonation issues even with the best instruments.

Go for Mike Williamson's set. Chinese compensators, which means that non-specialists can get close without a decade's study. Email contact available on request.

Er... not quite...!
The Wagner Tubas are hired out by the manager of the horn ensemble bearing my name ( Tony Halstead Horn Ensemble): Martin Childs. One of the other posters did actually mention this.
The tubas are located in the East Anglia/ Cambridge area and cost £120 a week to hire, plus delivery and insurance.

By the way, Mr Squeezy, they are Chinese compensators just like Mike W's set.

Paul, as you can see, Tony Halstead can put you in touch with the person who has the Wagner Tuba set, Martin Childs. I think you can contact Tony via his website

Paul's original posting has generated information on 3 sets of Wagner tubas.
In Leeds, London and East Anglia / Cambridge. It's a bit surprising that there haven't been any other recommendations, there surely must be more sets of tubas out there.
Paul, which orchestra is it that's doing the Bruckner?

Why did the Original posting refer to 'LOLLYPHONES'?
What's that all about?
And why did Deano refer us all to the ( Musicians' ?) 'Union directory' ( or such) to get Shirley Hopkins' contact details , when of course you have to be a member of the M.U. to get that book?
In any event, my ex-teacher used to complain that it was about 7 years out of date!

could it be that a Wagner tuba ( at least, some makes of wagner tuba) look a bit like a very large 'Lollipop'?
One of the orchestra's that I play with ( Sampson orchestra of Cambridge) is in the same position as Paul's orchestra, we also are doing the Bruckner 7th ( 'The Lyric') next year, so we are currently trying to find out whether the Tony Halstead Ensemble tubas cost $120 a week EACH or ( unlikely) 120 for all 4...anybody know? :?:
