Hello,
I have been looking at scores of music composed by John Marsh. There is an articulation mark with which I am unfamiliar. It looks like vertical line above or below the note. There is possibly a slight wedge shape to mark like an exclamation mark (!) without the dot. An example can be found here: https://www.areditions.com/rr/rrc/C062_music.pdf in the first bar violins and the second bar horns.
In the latter part of the 1700’s, would these be interpreted similar to a staccato? Ant insights would be appreciated.
Thanks

It's just a staccato sign.
Even early Beethoven ( e.g. Symphony no.1) uses the 'wedge' ( as in the Marsh example) and the 'staccato' signs interchangeably and indiscriminately.
By the way, the opening phrase of that Marsh piece is a pretty blatant crib of JC Bach Symphony Op.6 no.1!

Thanks for the answer.
I read that Marsh met John Bach about the same he wrote his symphony. Perhaps the inspiration from the meeting was influential. Marsh was an interesting character (if minor one) nonetheless.
