I saw on some web site the name of a player called 'Etienne Cutajar' referred to as 'Principal Horn BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra'.
You mentioned the wobbly horn tone of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, that is the tone of Mr J. Somerville who uses a discrete vibrato.
I had heard that he was 3rd horn and played 1st as part of the job. If he has been appointed is that an indication that the BBC are moving faster when filling vacancies? Most orchestras have been taking longer and longer to fill vacancies. Is that because it's harder to get rid of players now? That never used to be a problem except in the contract orchestras.
As for the wobbly tone I knew that American horn players used a fairly discreet touch of vibrato but that was plain wobbly. It was hard to tell what notes he was trying to play in some bits. Covers up a multitude of difficulties I suppose!
