The PHC “First” mouthpiece has been introduced to meet the needs of students and teachers. It gives the best starting point for players beginning to learn the horn as well as for students of other brass instruments moving to the horn.

The “First” by PHC is a one-piece mouthpiece combining the excellent PHC 21A cup with the popular AS rim.

This makes the properties of a world beating combination mouthpiece available at an affordable price and gives the student an introduction to the family of PHC horn mouthpieces.

As professional players in leading orchestras and teachers of the horn, the designers of PHC mouthpieces have always been aware of their responsibility to focus the design of mouthpiece cups and rims towards shapes which are comfortable and easy to play and which will protect the player’s embouchure from damage.

This is particularly relevant to young players whose teeth and lips need protection from the excessive pressures of small-rimmed mouthpieces.

Whilst good horn teachers should always be vigilant about correcting bad habits a well designed mouthpiece actually encourages good technique and is the most important piece of equipment a horn player can have.

Many new and used horns are supplied with a mouthpiece already in the case. These free mouthpieces are often poorly designed or even damaged and are unhelpful to the new horn player. It is therefore essential to obtain a new, carefully designed and suitably referenced mouthpiece.

The new one-piece PHC 'First' mouthpiece will be introduced in Frankfurt this week. We already have 300 silver-plated PHC 'First' mouthpieces in stock.

The price is £29.50 including VAT for this new one-piece mouthpiece.

I've noticed that the basic dimensions of the PHC First mouthpiece are very similar to those of the Paxman 4B as the PHC First is based on a PHC 21A cup with a fixed PHC AS rim.

PHC First rim width 4.50mm - Paxman 4B rim width 4.40mm

PHC First internal cup diameter 17.50mm - Paxman 4B internal cup diameter 17.78mm

PHC First bore size 4.50mm - Paxman 4B bore size 4.50mm

PHC First cup description "Medium cup" - Paxman 4B cup description "Medium"

PHC First £29.95 incl VAT - Paxman 4B £42.51

This is from Paxman's website and from the PHC First thread lower down the forum active topics.

Was this PHC's intention?

No that wasn't PHC's intention but thanks for pointing it out. We do stock PHC 'First' mouthpieces for £29.95 incl VAT plus P&P.

Please contact Mike Bosley at mikebosley@hotmail.co.uk to order.

Thanks,

PHC

I hope so. We will send some on a sale or return basis with the PHC E taper Z cups they have ordered.

I switched from a 4B to an AS some time ago - they are significantly different. The 4B rim is more rounded and feels narrower (to me) whereas the AS is quite flat in profile, and to me feels wider.

People who have nothing better to do than find sites on the internet that they complain about as being boring are even more boring.
