Tomboeck on what I guess was an F/F Alto was the correct time to use the short tube.
It enhanced the music (Haydn Farewell) and the "normal" Vienna horn in the Blue Danube
did likewise. The right tools at the right time.

Both superbly played - Bravo! :)

A beautiful sound in the Haydn. He made it sound like a Vienna horn.

8-)

Without being Devil's Advocate I thought Wolfgang made the Haydn sound better than if he had played it on a Vienna Horn!

Agreed. According to the oracle on all things Viennese (Herr Pizka) it was a Paxman
f/falto like the one Berger used for high Mozart/Haydn etc. In fact it could have been
the post '85 model an example of which is currently for sale at a website not a million
miles away.

Is this a good model to have rather than a 'normal' Paxman Bb/F-alto?
I noticed one for sale on the 'Halstead' web site recently, which is convertible to either F/F-alto or Bb/F-alto. Does anybody know this horn?
http://www.halsteadmusic.co.uk/shop/pro ... cts_id=277
It looks to be very nice (apart from the horrible red tuning slides, what's that all about?) and in excellent condition. Is it a tad over-priced?

I'd say it was (if anything) UNDER priced!
Some of my friends and colleagues seem to be able to penetrate the thick 'fog of technology' that permeates the PAXMAN website, and have reported to me that the current price of a new Paxman Model 40, Gold brass, lacquered, with a set of extra slides to play in
F (basso)/ F (alto) is about £7000!
By the way, I am really quite underwhelmed about the fact that some dealers, (specially one in the Midlands) have come 'under fire' on this website's previous incarnation because they don't give the prices of there horns on there websites, simply saying POA (price on application). Of course the exceptions to this are the websites of 'Hornplayer.net', the 'HornExchange' and 'Halstead Music' which all give the prices of the horns that they have for sale. The dealer in the Midlands seems to justify his witholding of price information by the somewhat glib assertion that 'stock is changing all the time'....
But, what are we to make of Paxman Ltd who are, compared to e.g. Schmid, Finke and indeed Alexander, somewhat 'coy' about stating the prices of their NEW horns?

To be fair, you can see Paxman's 2nd hand horn prices on the web site, it's just the new ones that they are secretive about. They do give the prices of their new 'student' and 'semi-pro' horns as well.
I suppose it forces a professional player to go there, phone or email them.
I heard the CSO this week too. I think they have 2 first horns :?: but the older guy has always sounded like an F alto even when he played a double ('Geyer', 'Schmidt', anybody know?) ;)

A little more respect please - you are slagging off one of the most distinguished
principal horns of all time - but perhaps you were unaware of the fact?

Hi Chris, Happy New Year to you too!
Now hang on a minute, it was Mike who started the 'shagging off' as you call it. All I can do is to either disagree or agree. As it happens I agree!
There is no horn player in the world who is totally above criticism, however 'great', distinguished, 'infallible' they are. My ears tell me that that 'elderly statesman' in the CSO is well over the hill and maybe should do a bit of gardening or other leisure pursuit these days.
Period (as they say in the USA)! ;)

'Flower power' will have a field day from my last posting!
I may be a c##p horn player (although I do have ears that can detect a tone like a blow-torch) but I CAN spell! :geek:
I meant 'SLAGGING' not 'SHAGGING' of course (something else entirely!)
