Now you're talking! Having owned several old Rovers over the years I know what you mean about the handbooks.
And yes, we probably worry far too much about instruments, mouthpieces etc. and fail to recognise 'the responsibility of the driver.' I suppose a modern equivalent is the user error acronym in the computer world PEBKAC (Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair). In my case it is definitely PEBMAC.
