Very sad news indeed: the renowned natural horn and trumpet maker John Webb passed away aged 78 on Thursday 6th March 2014. 20-odd years ago I had the honour and privilege of working with John on his various natural horn models, notably the Bohemian, French and baroque designs. He was in many ways a genius, a larger-than-life character who never ever displayed any 'side' and was always totally straightforward, direct and honest in his dealings with people on both professional and social / personal levels. Although deep-down a warm, friendly and courteous man, he could sometimes be outspoken, bluff and curt, when 'not suffering fools gladly'! He played all the lower brass instruments, including the ophicleide, expertly; between 1988 and 2013 he sold perhaps as many as 500+ of his very fine valveless horns to players all over the world. After 91 viewings of TonyH's message its nice to see the various comments about the late John Webb from so many interested horn players... 'not'! For anybody who'se interested the funeral/ cremation is tomorrow Thursday 20th at 12.45pm at Swindon Crematorium, SN25 6SG, UK. I have heard that John Wallace is going to play the Hummel Concerto in E as a tribute to the late John Webb. |
